Vegan Mongolian Beef

A quick and easy plant-based Mongolian beef recipe made of pan-fried seitan coated with a sweet and savory sauce. It is perfect for a delicious lunch or dinner with steamed rice and veggies!

Ingredients

Sauce

  • cup vegetable broth
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup dark soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons vegetarian oyster mushroom sauce
  • 1 teaspoon whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder

Gluten Mix

  • 3 cups sliced gluten if gluten is frozen, thaw it
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Cooking the Dish

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • ½ cup sweet onions sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper deseeded and quarted
  • 1 green bell pepper deseeded and quartered

Instructions

Sauce

  • In a small bowl, whisk together vegetable broth, brown sugar, soy sauce, oyster mushroom sauce, whole wheat flour, sesame seeds, and chili powder; set aside.

Gluten Mix

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine gluten, cornstarch, garlic powder, hoisin sauce, onion powder, smoked paprika, and ground black pepper. Toss together and allow it to marinate for at least 5 minutes.

Cooking the Dish

  • Pour the oil into a heated skillet over medium heat. Place and cook the marinated seitan until golden brown, about 1 minute on the flat sides.
  • Add in the onions and bell peppers and continue cooking for another 3 minutes while stirring constantly.
  • Pour the sauce mixture and let it simmer for 2 minutes, stirring once in a while.
  • Serve with steamed rice.
