    What is Tofu Salpicao?

This Tofu Salpicao is a vegan version of the Spanish-inspired Filipino stir-fry dish - Beef Salpicao or Salpicado de Solomillo! It is traditionally made with beef cubes cooked down in a tasty, savory sauce with lots of garlic bits.

It is one of the favorite Filipino dishes that are influenced by Spanish cuisine since the Philippines was under Spanish rule for many years. It's name is derived from the Spanish word salpicado, which means to spatter, sprinkle, or spotted.

In this recipe, I used firm tofu instead of beef, with soy sauce mix, minced garlic, onion, and seasonings which makes a delicious and addicting dish. It is quick and simple to make yet packed with fantastic flavor! It can be served as an appetizer or main dish for vegan lunch or dinner. Try and enjoy!

    Health Benefits of Tofu

    • Maintains cardiovascular health.
    • Helps lower bad cholesterol levels
    • Prevents osteoporosis and anemia.
    • Helps treat kidney diseases and gout.
    • Reduces the risk of cancer and diabetes.
    • Good source protein and iron.

    Substitutions

    • You may use olive oil for frying or any neutral oil that is available.
    • Feel free to use Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce mixture in this dish.

    Variations

    • You may garnish it with some toasted garlic, chopped parsley, and a few dashes of extra-virgin olive oil if desired.
    • Feel free to add vegan soy meat chunks and sliced button mushroom to this tofu salpicao recipe.
    • Serve this with plain steamed white rice, fried garlic rice, steamed adlai, or any grain of your choice.

    Storage

Transfer the leftovers to an airtight container and keep them in the freezer for up to 3 days.

    Top Tips

    • It is best to use the extra-firm tofu and a non-stick pan in this recipe.
    • Feel free to adjust the sauce measurements in this recipe to your taste. You can double its measurement if you want more sauce after cooking.
    • Draining tofu: Start by placing a chopping board on your countertop. Carefully take the pieces of tofu out of the package. Place the tofu on a towel to absorb any excess liquid. If you’re using thick pieces, consider pressing them gently to release more moisture.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can tofu be velveted?

Yes, tofu can be velveted to make it extra soft and tender. This technique helps the tofu absorb flavors better and gives it a nice texture in dishes.

How to season a block of tofu?

To season a block of tofu, first drain and press it to remove excess moisture. Then, marinate it in sauces like soy sauce or vegan oyster sauce for at least 15 minutes to enhance its flavor.

Do I need to soak tofu before cooking?

You don’t need to soak tofu before cooking, but draining and pressing it is important. This helps remove excess liquid, allowing the tofu to absorb marinades and cook better.
