Health Benefits of Tofu
- Excellent source of plant-based protein, essential for muscle repair and growth.
- Contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein.
- Low in calories, which makes it a great option for those looking to maintain or lose weight.
- Iron is crucial for transporting oxygen in the blood, and tofu provides a significant amount of this mineral.
- Often fortified with calcium, which is important for bone health.
Substitutions
- Tofu Alternatives: For a firmer texture and additional protein, try using tempeh instead of tofu. For a soy-free option, use shelled edamame.
- Sauce Variation: Swap sriracha mayo with spicy mayo for a different kind of heat.
Variations
- You can add sliced vegetables like ginger and carrots if you enjoy a bit more texture in every bite!
- You can squeeze a quarter slice of lemon or lime juice for a delicious tangy taste.
- If you love crispy tofu, you can fry the tofu coated with cornstarch.
- Drizzle a bit of maple syrup for a slightly sweet taste in your gluten-free tofu poke.
- Mix in some avocado, cucumber, pineapple, mango, and edamame beans for a more interesting texture in your tofu poke bowl.

Storage
Tofu poke can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For best results, store the tofu and rice separately to prevent the rice from becoming soggy.
Top Tips
- Not pressing the tofu: If you skip this step, the tofu can be too watery and not absorb the marinade well.
- Over-marinating: This vegan poke bowl is best marinated overnight. However, avoid letting it sit for more than 24 hours as the tofu can become too salty.
- Using the wrong tofu: Ensure you use extra firm tofu for the best texture.

Tofu poke is one of my go-to meals when I'm too lazy to cook, and it's my go-to recipe whenever there's a church potluck.
I've tried making this recipe using only tofu, soy sauce, sesame oil, onions, and salt, but adding the sesame seeds, green onions, and sriracha mayo give it that Hawaiian flavor.
Keep in mind, there are so many variations of tofu poke, but here's my version of it. 🙂

I’ve never worked with tofu. I bought extra firm, but it says silken. Now, I’m googling and unsure if this is the right one? Will this work uncooked in this recipe?
Lainey says
Hi Tasha,
Silken tofu and extra firm tofu are different. Silken tofu is soft and smooth, while extra firm tofu is dense and holds its shape. For this recipe, you need extra firm tofu. Silken tofu will fall apart and won't work well uncooked.
If you can, I recommend getting extra firm tofu to ensure the best results for your tofu poke. I am sorry for the late reply.
