    What are Ube Tarts?

Ube Tarts are delightful pastry desserts. They’re loaded with creamy ube (purple yam) sweetness. These treats have wonderful flavors and a beautiful purple color. The sweetness is just right and the crust is flaky and delicious.

Ube is commonly used for Filipino desserts. This tasty tart is one of the most popular ways to enjoy it. Each bite tastes like buttery shortbread crust with creamy ube cheesecake filling. It’s soft, rich, and so good you'll want more!

    History of Ube Tarts

Ube Tarts are a Filipino twist on classic mini pies or custard tarts. They’re filled with creamy ube halaya made from purple yam. The recipe likely came from Spanish and American baking influences during colonial times.

Filipinos began using local ingredients like ube. They created sweet pastries with their own flavors and style. Over time, they added toppings and made crusts easier.

They use muffin pans or molds with a removable bottom. Today, they’re loved for their bright color, unique flavor, and creamy texture.

    Health Benefits of Ube

    • Promotes heart health.
    • Loaded with antioxidants.
    • Good source of dietary fiber.
    • Provides minerals and vitamins.
    • Enhances energy and exercise performance.

    Substitutions

    • Mini tart shells – Use homemade pie crusts, phyllo cups, or graham cracker crusts.
    • Cream cheese – Swap with vegan cream cheese, Greek yogurt, or mascarpone.
    • Ube jam – Use mashed purple sweet potatoes or taro paste with a sweetener.
    • Sweetened condensed milk – Try coconut condensed milk for a dairy-free option.
    • Ube flavoring – Use vanilla extract and purple food coloring. Or add a touch of matcha green tea powder for a fun twist.
    • Salt – You can skip it if needed; it’s just a pinch.

    Recipe Variations

    • Flanbae Ube Tarts – Add a layer of leche flan under the ube. It creates a creamy flan-inspired tart.
    • Mini Ube Pie Bites – Use crushed graham crusts and chill instead of baking for a no-bake version.
    • Holiday Ube Tarts – Decorate with sprinkles, fruit, or candy based on the season (Valentine’s, Christmas, etc.).
    • Ube-Matcha Tarts – Add 1 teaspoon of matcha powder to the ube filling. It gives a tasty fusion twist.

    Storage

    • Let the tarts cool completely first. Then place them in an airtight container or wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
    • To serve, thaw them in the fridge overnight. Or leave at room temperature for a few hours. To bring back crispness, pop them in the oven for a few minutes.

    ⭐ Top Tip

Feel free to adjust the sweetness of your filling to your liking. You can also choose between homemade or store-bought ube custard filling or ube halaya, and top it with grated cheese, white chocolate, toasted coconut flakes, or a dollop of whipped cream.

For convenience, use ready-made tart shells - or make your crust from scratch if you have the time!

    FAQ

    What fruit is Ube?

Purple yams, or ube, are nutritious, versatile, and starchy root vegetables. They are loaded with antioxidants that may help reduce blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Dioscorea alata is a species of yam commonly referred to as purple yam, ube, violet yam, or water yam.

What are the 4 types of tarts?

There are four main types of tarts: fruit tarts, custard tarts, chocolate tarts, and savory tarts. Fruit tarts are typically filled with fresh fruits and a sweet glaze.

    Does ube taste like taro?
