    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This vegan siomai is a savory, healthy, and satisfying dish. You only need to blend, mix, wrap, and steam, so it's beginner-friendly. It can be served as a snack, side dish, or main dish with a dipping sauce.

The tofu and mushrooms create a hearty filling without using meat. Tofu provides plant-based protein. It also has carrots that contain beta carotene, which the body can turn into vitamin A.

    Ingredients

Listed below are all the ingredients you will need:

    • firm tofu
    • carrots
    • garlic
    • onion
    • oyster mushrooms
    • all-purpose flour
    • vegetarian oyster sauce
    • salt
    • sugar
    • green onions
    • siomai wrappers
    • oil

See the recipe card for quantities.

    10. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling. Keep unused wrappers covered so they do not dry out.

    Steam the Siomai

    11. Lightly grease the steamer with oil.

    12. Arrange the siomai inside without overcrowding them.

    13. Steam over medium heat for 7–10 minutes, or until the wrappers are soft and slightly translucent.

    Serve

    14. Carefully remove the siomai from the steamer.

    15. Serve warm with soy sauce and calamansi or chili-garlic sauce.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • Ingredient Swap
Try other mushrooms like shiitake or button instead of oyster mushrooms.
    • Variation
Add extra crunch with chopped water chestnuts.
    • Mistake to Avoid
Don't blend the vegetables until they're watery. The filling might get too soft, and the wrappers will tear.
    • Storage Tips
      • The tofu and mushroom filling freezes well, but the wrappers may become softer after thawing. Freeze the uncooked siomai in a single layer, then transfer them to a sealed container for up to 1 month. Store cooked siomai in the refrigerator for up to three days and reheat them by steaming.
      • When preparing the recipe ahead, keep the filling and wrappers separate in the refrigerator. Assemble the siomai shortly before steaming to prevent soggy wrappers.

    FAQs

Can I make vegan siomai without a steamer?

Yes, you can! Place a heatproof plate on a small rack inside a covered pot. Add water below the plate and steam the siomai without letting the water touch them.

    Can I freeze vegan siomai?

Yes. Freeze the uncooked siomai on a tray until firm, then place them in a freezer-safe container. Steam them directly from frozen and add a few extra minutes to the cooking time.

    Can I use wonton wrappers?

Yes. Square wonton wrappers work well for siomai. Keep them covered with a slightly damp towel while wrapping so they do not dry out.
