    🥘Ingredients

    • full-fat cream cheese
    • unsalted butter
    • vanilla extract
    • powdered sugar

See the recipe card for quantities.

powdered sugar, vanilla extract, cream cheese, butter on a marble table

    🔪Instructions

In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese and butter using an electric mixer, beat until smooth and creamy, then add vanilla extract and blend well. I opted for a stand mixer as it made mixing easier and allowed me to step away, but feel free to use a hand mixer if you prefer.

Gradually incorporate powdered sugar until reaching the desired sweetness and consistency, then beat the icing on medium-high speed for 2-3 minutes until fluffy.

💭 Hint: A good tip is to ensure that your ingredients, particularly cream cheese and butter, are at room temperature before making cream cheese icing. This helps them blend more easily and results in a smoother texture for your icing.

    📋Substitutions

    • Cream Cheese: You can substitute cream cheese with an equal amount of mascarpone cheese for a slightly different flavor profile. Alternatively, if you're looking for a dairy-free option, you can use vegan cream cheese.
    • Butter: If you prefer a lighter option, you can substitute part or all of the butter with an equal amount of vegetable shortening. However, keep in mind that this may alter the flavor and texture of the icing slightly.
    • Vanilla Extract: You can swap vanilla extract with other flavorings such as almond extract, lemon extract, or even a bit of citrus zest for a different flavor profile.
    • Powdered Sugar: If you don't have powdered sugar on hand, you can make your own by blending granulated sugar in a blender or food processor until it reaches a powdery consistency. Alternatively, you can use a sugar substitute like erythritol or stevia for a lower-calorie option.

    📖Variations

    • Lemon Cream Cheese Icing: Add some fresh lemon zest and a splash of lemon juice to the cream cheese icing for a tangy and refreshing flavor.
    • Cinnamon Cream Cheese Icing: Mix in some ground cinnamon to the cream cheese icing for a warm and spicy twist. This pairs particularly well with carrot cake or spice cake.
    • Maple Cream Cheese Icing: Substitute some of the powdered sugar with maple syrup for a rich and indulgent flavor. Drizzle a little extra maple syrup on top for an added touch of sweetness.
    • Chocolate Cream Cheese Icing: Mix in some cocoa powder or melted chocolate to the cream cheese icing for a rich and decadent chocolate flavor. You can adjust the amount of cocoa powder or melted chocolate to suit your taste preferences.
    • Berry Cream Cheese Icing: Fold in some mashed berries or berry jam to the cream cheese icing for a fruity and colorful twist. This works well with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries.

    Storage

    • Refrigeration: Cream cheese icing should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Due to the dairy content, it is perishable and can spoil if left out at room temperature for too long.
    • Use Within a Few Days: Cream cheese icing is best when consumed fresh. It can typically be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. After that, it may start to lose its freshness and flavor.
    • Avoid Freezing: While cream cheese icing can technically be frozen, it may change in texture and consistency upon thawing. The icing may become watery or grainy, which can affect its overall quality.
    • Bring to Room Temperature: If you've stored cream cheese icing in the refrigerator, allow it to come to room temperature before using it. This will make it easier to spread and ensure a smoother texture.
    • Check for Spoilage: Before using cream cheese icing that has been refrigerated, always check for any signs of spoilage, such as an off smell or unusual texture. If in doubt, it's best to discard it and make a fresh batch.

One of my friends from YouTube Julie and I got together and made some Halloween treats!  For this recipe, I decided to use a cake box mix which tasted DELICIOUS!  I was very surprised at the texture and taste and I was very pleased with it!  For the frosting I made a cream cheese frosting which had a beautiful texture and was very sweet and rich!
