What is Chocolate Filled Bread?
This Chocolate Filled Bread is inspired by the idea of combining a sweet bread with a melty surprise inside—semi-sweet chocolate chips or a rich chocolate bar. Popular in bakeries across the world, chocolate-filled breads are often seen as treats or breakfast goodies.
This version is super kid-friendly and uses a “mix-in-a-bag” method, making it mess-free and simple enough for little hands. Whether it’s a rainy day project or weekend family baking, this recipe is bound to become a favorite.
Substitutions
- all-purpose flour – sub with bread flour or mix with brioche dough for richness
- yeast – instant yeast works great; just mix right in
- warm water – swap with warm milk for a richer dough
- dry milk – replace with heavy cream or fresh milk and adjust liquids
- oil – use tablespoons butter for a buttery flavor or coconut oil for a lighter taste
- chocolate – use dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate chips, or even cocoa powder mixed with a little sugar and butter
Variations
- Nutty – sprinkle chopped hazelnuts or almonds into the chocolate filling
- Fruity – add sliced bananas or strawberries before sealing the bread
- Mini rolls – shape into cinnamon rolls or smaller sweet rolls
- Vegan – use non-dairy chocolate and replace dry milk with plant-based milk powder

Storage
- Countertop – Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days
- Refrigerator – Keeps well for up to 5 days
- Freezer – Freeze for up to 1 month; reheat in oven or toaster
Ingredients
- all-purpose flour
- yeast

Instructions
Before assembling the bread, make sure to preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and grease the baking pan.
In the bag, add 1 cup of flour, yeast, and sugar:

Pour in the warm water, squish until well blended, then set aside:

In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of flour, dry milk, salt, and oil, then mix into the bag. Then add the last cup of flour and mix well:

Take the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5–10 minutes until smooth:

Flatten dough into a rectangle, place your chocolate bar or chips in the center, fold, and seal the seams:

Shape as desired (try a braid or sweet roll!) and place seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until golden brown:

Now, this is ready to go inside the oven! See how easy that was, even your kids can make it with you 😉
Top Tips
- For the chocolate filling, feel free to use any store-bought chocolate filling of your choice.
- Kneading this well is important. Even if kids can do this recipe, it is good that you guide them in the kneading step.
- Do you love fresh-tasting bread? Add a little orange zest to the dough. I am sure it will smell so delicious!
- You can use vegan chocolate chips to fill this bread. It will melt deliciously inside the bread while baking it. Yum!

Where is the chocolate in your recipe for your chocolate bread?

The pictures with instructions at the top are messed up too, along with the recipe not mentioning the chocolate at all…
“Roll to desired shapes, and bake for 30-35 minutes: Then remove dough from bag and knead for 5-10 minutes: Now, this is ready to go inside the oven!”
But I guess it’s just one of those “Add however much you want, it’ll probably work” recipes?

Hi AwesomePossum, thank you for your comment! Updated the recipe. 🙂
