    What is Crispy Orange Tofu?

This Crispy Orange Tofu, sometimes called vegan orange chicken, is a delicious tofu dish made of breaded, firm tofu cubes that are pan-fried until crispy and coated in a sweet and savory Asian-style orange sauce.

It's a plant-based Filipino version of the traditional Chinese orange chicken recipe that is easy to make, healthy, and perfect to serve on any occasion. Consider making this delicious fried tofu, sauce, and all, in your own kitchen.

This vegan orange tofu is one of the best homemade tofu recipes you can make for your family. It can be served and eaten on its own or with rice, noodles, or stir-fried vegetables. Enjoy!

    Benefits of Tofu

    • High in plant-based protein
    • Rich in calcium, iron, and potassium
    • Low in carbohydrates
    • Helps absorb bold flavors like orange glaze
    • Versatile—great for crispy baked tofu, air fryer tofu, or stir-fries

    Substitutions

    • Firm tofu – Try extra-firm for better texture or use mushrooms or cauliflower florets as an alternative
    • Cornstarch – Use arrowroot powder or tapioca starch for a gluten-free thickener
    • Garlic powder – Sub with onion powder for a different depth of flavor
    • Vegetable oil – Air-fry the tofu or use avocado oil for a lighter option
    • Soy sauce – Use tamari, coconut aminos, or low-sodium soy sauce
    • Brown sugar – Swap for agave nectar or maple syrup
    • Fresh orange juice is best to use for this recipe, but canned orange juice can be used. Just make sure it's 100% pulp-free.

    Variations

    • Spicy – Add chili flakes or a spoonful of sriracha
    • Kid-friendly – Use less soy sauce and sugar to tone down bold flavors for kids
    • Crunchy – Top with cashews, almonds, or sesame seeds for a crunch
    • With noodles – Serve over udon, basmati, or rice noodles
    • Loaded veggie version – Toss in snow peas, green beans, or red onion

    Storage

    • Fridge – Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days
    • Freezing not recommended – Freezing changes the tofu’s texture and can make the sauce separate
    • Leftovers – Great in wraps or bowls with steamed broccoli or stir-fried veggies

    Top Tips

    • You can either pan fry, air fry, or bake the breaded firm tofu according to your preference.
    • It is best to use firm or extra firm tofu in fried tofu recipes. Make sure to drain the water from the tofu before frying by putting something heavy, like a chopping board, on top of it.
    • Feel free to add red pepper flakes for a spicy flavor, white or rice vinegar for a tangy taste, and orange zest or ginger if you want it to be deliciously zesty.
    • Topping options: green onion slices or sesame seeds

    FAQ

How do you make orange tofu sauce?

You make orange tofu sauce by simmering orange juice, soy sauce (or tamari), brown sugar, garlic, and mushroom sauce in a pan. Then, add a cornstarch mixture (cornstarch + water) to thicken it into a sticky, sweet-savory glaze that coats the tofu perfectly.

How do you make orange tofu sticky?

The addition of cornstarch slurry to this recipe makes a sticky orange tofu.

What is the secret to crispy tofu?

The secret is pressing the tofu to remove excess water, cutting it into 1-inch cubes, coating it in cornstarch, and cooking it over medium-high heat in a pan or air fryer without overcrowding. This helps the tofu get golden and crispy on all sides!
