What is Easy Hot Chocolate Mug Cake?

The Easy Hot Chocolate Mug Cake is a fun and fast dessert that brings all the cozy flavors of classic hot chocolate into cake form. It became popular thanks to the rise of microwaves and the love for fast, no-fuss desserts.

Think of it as your favorite hot chocolate cake, but quicker! It’s made by mixing all of the ingredients in a mug, zapping it in the microwave, and voilà—you get fluffy cake batter turned into a soft, moist cake. It’s a cozy go-to for the colder time of year and is great for when you don’t feel like baking a whole cake.

    Subsitutions

    • all-purpose flour – use almond flour or a gluten-free blend
    • sugar – replace with maple syrup, coconut sugar, or monk fruit sweetener
    • unsweetened cocoa powder – swap with hot chocolate powder or a Swiss Miss packet for extra sweetness
    • milk – use whole milk, oat, soy, or almond milk
    • egg – use 1 tbsp flaxseed + 2.5 tbsp water (flax egg) or ¼ mashed banana
    • vegetable oil – sub with coconut oil, canola oil, melted butter, unsalted butter, or applesauce
    • vanilla extract – almond, or peppermint extract work for fun flavor twists
    • pinch of salt – optional, but enhances the chocolate flavor

    Variations

    • Chocolate overload – add dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate chips, or a spoonful of Nutella or peanut butter
    • Holiday style – mix in crushed candy canes or top with mini marshmallows
    • Extra moist – add a drizzle of chocolate syrup, hot fudge, or chocolate sauce
    • Dessert mode – top with vanilla ice cream and your favorite toppings

    Storage

    • Countertop – Best eaten fresh, but can sit for a few hours at room temperature
    • Fridge – Store for up to 2 days in the mug, cover with plastic wrap
    • Freezer – Not recommended; texture changes when reheated

    Ingredients

    • all-purpose flour
    • sugar
    • unsweetened cocoa powder
    • milk
    • egg
    • oil
    • salt
    • vanilla extract

    Instructions

In a large microwave-safe mug or bowl, add the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, and cocoa powder. Stir in the wet ingredients: milk, egg, oil, and vanilla extract. Add a pinch of salt. Mix well until the cake batter is smooth.

    mixing ingredients

Microwave on high for 2 mins. Check doneness with a toothpick—it should come out clean or with moist crumbs. Let it cool slightly, then enjoy it with your favorite toppings!

    Top Tips

To keep your mug cake super moist, don’t overcook it—microwave for exactly 2 minutes and let it sit for a minute to finish cooking through.

    FAQ

Can you make a mug cake with hot chocolate?

Yes, you totally can! Just swap the cocoa powder with your favorite hot chocolate mix or a Swiss Miss packet. It makes the cake sweeter and gives it that classic cozy hot cocoa taste.

How do you know when a mug cake is done?

Insert a toothpick—if it comes out clean, your mug cake is ready.

Why is my mug cake rubbery?

That usually means it was overcooked. Microwave times can vary, so try cooking it for a little less—start with 1 minute and 45 seconds and check it with a toothpick. Also, don’t overmix the cake batter—just stir until combined for a softer texture.

I was wondering if I can make this chocolate mug cake in a rice cooker? I mean instead of using a mug I just put it directly to a rice cooker and cook it.

I am really hoping for you feedback.

      Thanks! 🙂
