What is Chai Spiced Oatmeal
This recipe blends the hearty goodness of oatmeal with the aromatic spices of chai for a breakfast that’s as nutritious as it is delicious. Perfect for busy mornings or leisurely weekends, this dish is a must-try for anyone looking to spice up their mornings.
The warm spices of chai—cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom—create a comforting aroma that transforms your kitchen into a cozy haven.
Combined with the creamy texture of oats and the crunch of fresh fruit and nuts, it’s a breakfast that satisfies all your senses.
Substitutions
- Almonds: Don’t have almonds? Try pecans, walnuts, or sunflower seeds.
- Agave syrup: Replace agave syrup with maple syrup or honey. You may also use coconut sugar or brown sugar.
- Coconut Cream: Swap coconut cream for a dollop of Greek yogurt if you’re not vegan.
Variations
- Sweet and Spicy Chai Oatmeal: Add a teaspoon of ground ginger or use a chai tea bag steeped in hot water for an extra spicy kick. Top with a drizzle of honey or maple syrup to balance the spice
- Nutty Chai Oatmeal Incorporate almond butter, pecan butter, or your favorite nut butter for a creamy texture. Sprinkle roasted nuts or seeds on top for added crunch.

Storage
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
- To reheat, simply add a splash of milk and microwave for 1-2 minutes, stirring halfway.
Ingredients
Listed below are all the ingredients you will need:
- rolled oats
- chia seeds
- cinnamon powder
- nutmeg powder
- cardamom powder
- dairy-free milk
- water
- agave syrup
- coconut cream
- kiwi, strawberry, and almonds as toppings
Instructions
In a medium nonstick pan or saucepan over medium heat, add rolled oats, chia seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom, and allow it to roast for 10 seconds to bring out the flavors.
Add any non-dairy milk (I used almond milk), water, agave syrup, and coconut cream, and stir until you achieve a thick consistency, about 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and transfer in 2 serving bowls and top oats with almonds, kiwi, and strawberries before serving.

Top Tips
- Toast the Spices: Toasting the dry ingredients like spices, oats, and chia seeds intensifies their flavors. Don’t skip this step—it’s the secret to a more aromatic dish.
- Use a Chai Spice Blend: If you’re short on time, grab a pre-made chai spice mix or blend your own with cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, allspice, and ground cloves.
- Toppings alternatives: Any fresh fruit, seeds (pumpkin seeds, chia seeds), coconut flakes, dried fruit.

I love oatmeal and I try to eat it at least 4x a week due to the many health benefits and the easiness of making oatmeal (since I'm not a morning person).
Growing up, oatmeal was a staple at my house and it was usually made the same. My parents cooked it with water and then ate it with raisins, milk, and sometimes vegetarian meat-like links. (We weren't allowed to add sugar, but sometimes I sneaked in syrup into my oatmeal 🙂
Now living with my husband, I've experimented with so many ways of eating oatmeal like this recipe and I'm excited to share with you different variations of oatmeal in the future!
