What is Vegan Strawberry Banana Smoothie?

A Vegan Strawberry Banana Smoothie is a dairy-free, nutrient-packed beverage made by blending ripe strawberries and bananas with plant-based ingredients like almond milk, coconut water, or another non-dairy liquid. This refreshing drink is popular among those following a vegan lifestyle and anyone looking for a healthy, naturally sweet way to start the day or refuel after a workout.

History of Vegan Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Originating from the mid-20th century health food movement, the Smoothie recipe quickly became a favorite as home blenders made it easy to mix fresh fruits. Its naturally sweet, creamy blend transitioned to a dairy-free delight with the rise of plant-based diets, and today it remains a popular choice for health enthusiasts and vegans alike.

    Substitutions

    • Frozen bananas - Use fresh bananas with a handful of extra ice for a similar chill and thickness.
    • Ice - Frozen fruit chunks (like berries or peaches) – chill the smoothie while enhancing flavor
    • Dairy-free milk - Choose your favorite non-dairy milk - unsweetened almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, soy milk, or cashew milk - when you purchase your ingredients.
mason jars of the delicious smoothie

    Recipe Variations

    • Green Boost - Add a handful of spinach or kale for extra vitamins and minerals without altering the fruity flavor too much
    • Spiced Variation - Mix in a dash of ginger, turmeric, or a few mint leaves for an invigorating flavor profile
    • Protein-Packed - Blend in a scoop of plant-based protein powder or a tablespoon of hemp, chia, or flax seeds to turn it into a satisfying post-workout snack

    Storage

Refrigerate Immediately: If you plan to enjoy your smoothie within 24 hours, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Give it a good shake or stir before drinking, as natural separation may occur.

Freeze for Later: For longer storage, pour your smoothie into a freezer-safe container, leaving a little space for expansion. It can be kept in the freezer for up to 2 months. When ready to drink, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and give it a quick blend or stir for a smooth consistency.

Pre-Portion Ingredients: Consider assembling and freezing individual smoothie packs with your fruits and greens. This way, you can simply add your preferred dairy-free milk and blend fresh whenever you’re in the mood for a nutritious treat.

Opt for Quality Containers: Using glass jars or BPA-free containers can help preserve the flavor and maintain the freshness of your smoothie without any unwanted aftertaste.

Hint: For a fun twist, consider adding blueberries, raspberries, or kiwi, or even tossing in mango chunks for a tropical burst of flavor!

    ⭐ Top Tip

    • Smoothies are often taken in the morning, so you can add all the good things you need for breakfast - plain yogurt, oatmeal, oatmeal protein, and even vegetables! My favorite vegetable to add is kale because it's nutritional benefits and the fact you cannot taste it in a smoothie.
    • You can also add nuts like cashews, pine nuts, peanuts, or even healthy seeds like chia and sunflower seeds.
    • To amp up the flavor, a splash of vanilla extract is a great addition, and if you like extra sweetness, a drizzle of maple syrup or agave syrup can do the trick. Some recipes even suggest a spoonful of greek yogurt for extra creaminess, though for a truly vegan version, opt for a dairy-free alternative.

    FAQ

How healthy is a strawberry banana smoothie?

A 12-ounce serving of strawberry banana smoothie contains 188 to 210 calories, putting it into the range of an ideal snack.

What is a non dairy thickener for smoothies?

Nut butter, seed butter or peanut butter can also be added to the blender to thicken a smoothie and add a nutty taste. I love adding nut butter to banana smoothies or chocolate smoothies. If you're not sure what nut butter is, my top 2 favorites are almond butter and cashew butter.

What can I use to make a smoothie thicker?

Frozen ingredients are the key to creating a thick smoothie. Using fibrous, thick-fleshed fruit and vegetables can also help the texture. Adding chia seeds, avocado, yogurt, and protein powder are other thickening options.
