    • Guyabano Smoothie

The smoothie is not traditionally tied to specific holidays but is a staple at family gatherings, fiestas, and beach outings.

During festive seasons, like Christmas and New Year, some households may serve Guyabano smoothies, offering a unique flavor profile to complement traditional dishes.

It’s also common at street food stalls and cafes, particularly in urban and tourist areas.

    What is Guyabano Smoothie?

A Guyabano smoothie is a creamy and refreshing drink made from the pulp of the guyabano fruit, also known as soursop.

Soursop fruit grows abundantly in tropical regions and is such an easy fruit tree to grow because it requires very minimal attention. The guyabano fruit tastes sour like that of a strawberry but has a milky flavor.

The guyabano shake is loved not only for their tropical taste but also for their health benefits, as the fruit is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber.

    Guyabano/Sourop Health Benefits

    • A good source of antioxidants
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • Can help stabilize blood sugar levels
    • Source of dietary fiber
    • Has a significant amount of vitamin C

    Variations

    • Spiced - Sweeten with maple syrup or honey if needed, and sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon on top before serving.
    • Berry Bliss - Serve chilled and garnish with a few fresh berries.
    • Coffee - Blend guyabano, coffee, oat milk, and ice until smooth.
Smoothie topped with leaves and seeds

    Substitutions

    • Frozen Banana - avocado for the creaminess without the sweetness, or papaya for a mild sweetness and smooth texture.
    • Ice Cubes - any frozen fruit like berries, mango or pineapple can work!
    • Soy Milk - for a nutty, dairy-free alternative, use almond milk. But to enhance tropical flavors and adds creaminess, use coconut milk.
    • Chia seeds - sunflower seeds or flaxseeds can be good for alternatives

    Storage

    • Refrigerator: Transfer to an airtight jar or bottle and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Shake or stir before serving as separation may occur.
    • Freezer: Pour into an airtight container, leaving some space for expansion, and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw in the refrigerator and blend again for best consistency.

These are the ingredients that you will need (omitting quantities):

Hint: You can freeze this smoothie and make it into a guyabano ice cream, too!

    ⭐ Top Tip

Remove the guyabano seeds prior to freezing them - it saves you a lot of time.

Don't forget to keep your guyabano pulp or chunks in the freezer when you're not using it. They tend to change in color because of the reaction it has when exposed to air.

    FAQ

    Where can people buy soursop?

You can find soursop at your local Asian market. Be sure to check the fresh produce section or the frozen aisle.

How much soursop should I eat daily?

If you eat soursop or drink this great smoothie, limit your consumptions to ½ cup a couple of days a week.

    Who should not take soursop?

Tea made from the leaves should be avoided during pregnancy. Do not take tea for long periods of time and avoid use in small children. Due to its blood glucose lowering effects, supplements containing soursop or graviola should be taken with caution by patients taking anti-diabetic medications.
