What is a Morning Biscuit?
A morning biscuit is a tasty and filling baked treat that's perfect for starting your day. It's like a small, round bread that you can eat in the morning. Morning biscuits can be savory or sweet, depending on what ingredients you use. They're often made with flour, milk, butter, and sometimes cheese or sugar.
You can enjoy them on their own, or you can add toppings like jam, honey, or eggs to make them even more delicious!
Although this isn't the healthiest of breakfasts, you gotta start somewhere, right? 😉

Substitutions
- All-purpose flour: Whole wheat flour, almond flour, or a gluten-free flour blend.
- Granulated sugar: Brown sugar, coconut sugar, or honey.
- Baking powder: Baking soda (use ¼ teaspoon baking soda for every teaspoon of baking powder) or self-rising flour (omit the baking powder and salt if using self-rising flour).
- Salt: Sea salt or kosher salt.
- Shredded cheddar cheese: Any other cheese you prefer, such as mozzarella, Colby, or Monterey Jack.
- Egg: Flaxseed egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water), mashed banana, or applesauce (¼ cup).

- Butter: Margarine or coconut oil (for dairy-free option).

Storage
- If you have any leftovers, store in an airtight container. These homemade biscuits will stay fresh for up to 3 days when stored and covered at room temperature.
- It can be placed in the freezer for up to 1 month. Just reheat using a microwave and warm for 30-45 seconds.

Ingredients
Listed below are all the ingredients you will need:
- all-purpose flour
- granulated sugar
- baking powder
- salt
- shredded cheddar cheese
- egg
- whole milk
- butter
- garlic powder
- scallions
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside.
In a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, baking powder, and ½ teaspoon salt. Then, whisk to combine.
Next, add the shredded cheddar cheese and mix until coated in the flour. Set aside.

In a small bowl, add the egg and lightly beat the egg. Then, add in the milk and ¼ cup of the cooled melted butter, and mix to combine.
After that, add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined, a few lumps are okay, but make sure there are no dry patches.

Evenly dollop 12 portions of the biscuit mix on the baking sheet, about 3 inches apart. Each biscuit equals about ¼ cup of biscuit mix. I like to use a ¼ cup scooper for this.
Bake in the preheated oven for 17-20 minutes until golden brown. While the biscuits are baking, mix a pinch of salt, garlic powder, and sliced scallions with the remaining melted butter.
When the morning biscuits are done, immediately brush them all evenly with the butter topping.

Allow it to cool slightly on a wire rack, garnish with cheese and chives or scallions, and serve warm!

These also make great breakfast sandwiches or eat with your favorite jam or slather it with honey butter. Enjoy every bite!
Top Tips
- The key to flaky layers in the biscuit is to always use cold ingredients. So, particularly for this recipe, don't take out anything until you're ready to use that ingredient in the recipe (except for the melted butter).
- The baking powder is what helps the biscuit layers puff up. So it's important to check the freshness of the baking powder. To test, mix together ½ tablespoon and ¼ cup of hot water. If it's fresh, it will bubble strongly.
- Be gentle with the dough. Do not over-knead the dough because the more you do, the more gluten will develop and the tougher your biscuit will be.

Wow! I was so impressed with this recipe and it’s so simple! I didn’t have any cheddar but used a 6 cheese blend of Italian cheeses and it was so wonderful! I think I’m gonna try it with just Parmesan and bet it’s awesome! Thanks 🙏
