    What is Filipino Macaroni Salad?

Filipino Macaroni Salad is a popular holiday dessert in the Philippines that is both sweet and creamy and ideal for any occasion. Since Filipinos love colorful food during the Christmas and New Year seasons, this recipe is a must-have in every home. In fact, it has become one of the favorite Christmas desserts of Filipinos.

The delicious and creamy taste combined with the sweetness of condensed milk, elbow macaroni pasta, mayonnaise, and fruit mix is what makes this Filipino-style macaroni salad recipe a sure hit! Raisins provide a little bit of sweetness, while grated cheese adds a savory twist, resulting in a well-balanced and delightful dish.

This no-bake pasta salad is simple to make and full of flavor, making it ideal for parties, holidays, and family gatherings!

    Variations

    • Feel free to add nata de coco and kaong to this macaroni fruit salad dessert.
    • Grated carrots add a somewhat earthy flavor that complements the richness of the fruits and dressing.
    • To make a crisp, juicy version that goes well with the creamy dressing, mix in sliced apples and seedless grapes.
    • Mixing macaroni pasta with cooked shredded chicken breast instead of fruit mix make a chicken macaroni salad for a non-vegetarian side dish.

    Substitutions

    • Fruit Mix (Fruit Cocktail): If the canned fruit mix is not available, you can use fresh slices of fruit or pineapple tidbits instead.
    • Elbow Pasta: Use alternative pasta forms such as penne, fusilli, or shell pasta for a different texture but the same flavor.
    • Mayonnaise: For a tangier or dairy-free variation that retains the creamy texture, use Greek yogurt or a vegan mayo substitute. Some Filipinos use all-purpose cream with condensed milk for fruit salads.

    Storage

    • Refrigerate this Filipino macaroni salad in an airtight container for up to 3 days to keep the Filipino Macaroni Salad fresh and flavorful.
    • Avoid storing it at room temperature for long periods, as the creamy ingredients may spoil quickly. It is safe to say that you can take it out from the refrigerator for 20 to 30 minutes.

    Top Tips

    • Always follow the cooking directions for the pasta in the package. Soggy pasta won't taste great in any pasta dish.
    • Chill first before serving. Macaroni salad tastes way better after all the flavors stick to the macaroni.

    FAQ

Does macaroni salad have to be refrigerated?

Yes, it has to be chilled after making it. The mayo and cheese and other ingredients can contribute to fast spoilage when macaroni salad is left at room temperature.

Can I make this a day in advance?

Yes, for sure! For me, it takes way better when eaten the next day after making it.

Where can you find vegan mayonnaise?

It is sold usually in vegan stores and even regular grocery shops.
